DEFENDER is the inaugural work of The Adachi Project, an official city-sanctioned partnership between the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, Even/Odd, and Compound.

Created to honor the legacy of late San Francisco Public Defender, Jeff Adachi, DEFENDER's exclusive access uncovers and illuminate the vital work of the Public Defender through art, media, and culture.

More than a year into the Pandemic, and as the general population has acclimated to COVID-19, San Francisco's Criminal Legal System has continued to fail those detained in San Francisco County Jail.

With unprecedented access and permission to record video calls, individuals detained but not sentenced (who are presumed innocent) describe living conditions that include only one hour of time outside of their cells, crowded jails, and being denied their constitutional right to a speedy trial.
