A voicemail project and interactive installation celebrating the Black and Brown lives killed by police.
Created by Mohammad Gorjestani and Even/Odd, 1-800 Happy Birthday features 30 hours of voicemails for the families, including Oscar Grant, Philando Castile, Mario Woods, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, and others.
“As a mother, you look forward to celebrating birthdays and milestones. 1-800 Happy Birthday gives me an opportunity to keep celebrating Oscar’s birthday and his legacy through friends, family, and supporters.”
Rev. Wanda Johnson, Oscar Grant’s Mother
With support from arts non-profit WORTHLESS STUDIOS, the project debuted as a Public Installation at the NADA Art Fair, featuring a phone booth donated by the city of New York.
In Fall of 2022, an installation featuring 16 phone booths will open at WORTHLESS STUDIOS, and mark the inaugural exhibition of the 5,000 square foot space in Brooklyn.
